Connections: Classroom to Community Class

Connections: Classroom to Community is an exploration class at ASB Innovation Academy that teaches us to give back to our community. In this class, during the month of October, we held a winter drive called “Socktober”. Socktober is a fundraiser to give socks and other necessities to people in need because winter is coming up. We accepted donations starting October 4 and ended donations on October 15. Donations included socks, hats, gloves, scarves, coats, sweatshirts, blankets, personal hygiene items, and money donations. We put donation boxes in each grade-level commons. We had a competition, and the grade level that had the most donations got to have a pizza party.  We checked the boxes every day. We had a chart to keep track of the donations.

Here are the socktober results: 3rd place was 8th grade with a total of 77 points. 2nd place was 7th grade with a total of 1,684 points. 1st place was 6th grade with a total of 1,922 points. The 6th graders donated the most so they won the pizza party. In all we donated 519 pairs of socks, 1,311 personal hygiene items, 244 canned food items, 140 winter gear items, 95 coats/sweatshirts/blankets. In money we raised $162.00 for hat day, and $226.00 for Socktober.

All food items were donated to WBSD #7 food pantries. Some winter gear items were donated to Gloria Dei Church. Half of the blankets were donated to the Williston Police Department Animal Control. The other half of the blankets were donated to Mondak Animal Rescue. All the coats and snow pants were donated to WBSD #7 homeless liaison/social worker, Allison Stensland. All adult-sized clothes, socks, and underwear items were donated to Eckert Youth Homes along with personal hygiene items. All kid-sized clothes, socks, and underwear items were donated to Williston Salvation Army. Personal hygiene items were donated to The Family Crisis Shelter. The money that was raised will go to a teenager in need for Christmas using the Fill-a-Forgotten Stocking program through American State Bank. Thank you so much to whoever donated.
